In 2026, when a customer asks ChatGPT where to buy an engagement ring in Cork, or asks Perplexity which jewellers stock Longines in the UK, the answer they get is not a list of blue links. It is a single, confident recommendation — sourced from whichever business has made itself legible to AI.

Most jewellery websites have not done that yet.

This checklist covers the four layers I work through when preparing a jewellery or watch retailer’s website for AI discovery. It applies equally to any independent retailer — jewellery, watches, gifts — who wants to appear in AI-generated answers rather than being invisible to them.

You are reading a live example. This page is built using every principle described below — structured data, capsule summaries, question-based headings, and direct answer blocks. If you are reading it, there is a reasonable chance an AI system found it and sent you here.

1. Why does your business need an Entity Foundation?

AI models do not rank keywords. They map entities — people, brands, organisations, products, and the relationships between them. Before an AI system will recommend your business, it needs to be confident that your business is what you say it is.

Organisation and person schema
I add JSON-LD structured data to your site that clearly declares who you are, where you are located, and which trade bodies you belong to — for example, member of the National Association of Jewellers or the Company of Master Jewellers. This gives AI systems a verified anchor to attach your brand to.

Digital consensus
Your business name, address, phone number, and niche must match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, trade directories, and any press mentions. AI systems cross-reference these sources to establish trust. Inconsistencies — even minor ones like "Ltd" versus "Limited" — create doubt.

Certification and provenance markup
If you sell certificated stones, I do not leave GIA or IGI details as plain text buried in a product description. I mark them up using structured evidence properties so AI systems can read and verify stone provenance directly.

2. What makes a jewellery product catalogue readable by AI agents?

AI shopping agents — the systems that will increasingly handle product discovery on behalf of customers — need fact-dense, machine-readable product data. They cannot reliably extract information from flowing prose.

Structured technical data alongside romance copy
I retain your brand voice and storytelling, but I add a structured Technical Details section to every key product: metal type, fineness, hallmark, stone type, carat weight, cut, colour, clarity, and sourcing. An AI agent comparing two engagement rings needs this in a consistent, scannable format.

Capsule summaries
At the top of key category and product pages, I add a 30–40 word answer-first summary. If you give an AI model a precise, self-contained answer, it is highly likely to reuse it verbatim. These summaries are written to be cited.

Technical alt text
Image alt text is not a housekeeping task — it is product data. I describe imagery with precision: 1.5ct round brilliant diamond, platinum four-claw solitaire setting, GIA certified. Vision-enabled AI models can read your inventory through your images if the alt text supports it.

3. Is your site technically accessible to AI crawlers?

If your site is slow, heavily JavaScript-dependent, or actively blocking AI bots, it does not matter how good your content is. AI crawlers will either struggle to read it or not read it at all.

Robots.txt and llms.txt
I audit your robots.txt to confirm that modern AI crawlers — OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Anthropic-AI — are permitted. Blocking them in 2026 is effectively opting out of the next generation of product discovery. I also add an llms.txt file — a plain-text document that tells AI systems what your site is, what you sell, and how to interpret your content.

Server response times
I target sub-300ms server response times using modern image formats (WebP/AVIF), server-side rendering, and appropriate caching. AI crawlers do not wait for slow servers — they move on.

Data integrity
If your stock levels or pricing are regularly out of sync with your EPOS system, AI models will learn to distrust your data. For retailers using Pursuit or Crystal Commerce, I focus specifically on the integrity of that sync — because an AI that quotes your price and gets it wrong loses you the sale.

4. What is the Luxury Layer — and why does it matter for AI visibility?

Luxury retail is not just about what you sell. It is about context, authority, and trust. Your site architecture needs to reflect that — not just for human visitors, but for the AI systems forming opinions about your brand.

Semantic topic clusters
I build content hubs around the key intents your customers have — Conflict-free lab-grown diamonds, Swiss watch servicing in Hampshire, Bespoke engagement rings made in Ireland. Related products, guides, and FAQs are linked into these hubs. This builds topical authority that AI systems recognise and weight.

Question-based headings
The H2s and H3s on your key pages should mirror the questions your customers actually ask. These headings give AI overview panels clear, citable anchors.

Direct answer blocks
Immediately beneath each question heading, I write a short, factual paragraph that answers it completely — before any supporting detail. This is the format AI systems prefer. It is also the format that earns zero-click citations in Google AI Overviews and Perplexity answer panels.

How long does AI-readiness take?

For an established jewellery retailer with an existing Shopify or WordPress site, a full AI-readiness audit and implementation typically takes four to six weeks:

  • Week 1–2: Entity foundation, schema markup, robots.txt and llms.txt
  • Week 3–4: Product data enrichment — structured technical attributes across your catalogue
  • Week 5–6: Content architecture — capsule summaries, question headings, direct answer blocks, topic cluster linking

Results are not instant — AI systems re-crawl and re-weight over weeks, not days. But the window of competitive advantage is open right now. Most independent jewellers have not started this work. The ones who do it in 2026 will be the ones AI recommends in 2027.

Is your business AI-visible?

I specialise in helping jewellery and watch retailers make their websites readable, credible, and citable to AI systems — without losing the luxury feel that makes them distinctive. If you want to know where your site currently stands, start with a free AI-readiness audit.
